Speaking/Listening
Our English language learners need practice in both speaking and listening
1.) It's important to continue to practice English daily
2.) Students may have a higher level in either speaking or listening
3.) Speaking and listening both need to be improved to improve either reading or writing
Comprehension
Connection between fluency and comprehension:
It is extremely difficult to have strong comprehension/understanding about a book if a student reads the book dis-fluently (choppy or with awkward phrasing.) To explain this fact to my students, I will tell them something and put a long pause in between each of my words. It might be silly, and make the students laugh, but it also helps them understand how difficult it is to listen to themselves when they read the spaces.
All of our fluency rules are so our brains can listen as we read and help us understand what we're reading.
